Askology's Best Neuroscience-Based Strategies for Getting Sh!t Done: Take Regular Breaks

Updated: Jan 27, 2022

Toronto's Sandy MacKenzie gives a sneak peak into the neuroscience-based strategies included in the "Getting Sh!t Done" programme.

If you follow our #4 strategy of working in short bursts, like utilizing the Pomodoro Technique, you’ll naturally take regular breaks. This gives your mind a chance to recover from intense focus.

Taking regular breaks from work to listen to music is a good tool for maximizing results.

However, if your instinct is to take this time to check your social media or your emails, this digital onslaught of content doesn’t allow your mind to truly “switch off.”

To maximize the benefit of each break, it helps to avoid anything that’s mentally taxing in any way. This is especially true for short breaks where you’re going to have to get back to work in a matter of minutes. For a five-minute break to count, you’re going to want to avoid anything that divides your attention, involves any decision-making, or requires concentration. Instead, grab a coffee, go to the washroom, do some stretching, meditate or just sit in silence and completely zone out for a few minutes.
